Today, the world is commemorating the International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade, under the theme “Fighting slavery’s legacy of racism through transformative education.”

In a message, the Permanent Representative of Ghana underscored that “even though there is global convergence on the dehumanising treatment that the over 13 million Africans experienced during the Transatlantic Slave Trade, it is regrettable that slavery’s horrible legacy lives on, disguised in institutional discrimination and racism against Africans.

While paying tribute to the victims of slavery, he welcomed the prioritization of education as a powerful tool in unmasking and guarding humanity from the vestiges of slavery and urged Member States to heed to the call to root out the vestiges of slavery. He reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to supporting global efforts in ensuring that mankind irrespective of one’s race do not suffer this traumatic experience again.
