GHANA RE-ELECTED TO THE UNITED NATIONS HUMAN RIGHTS COUNCIL FOR 2027–2029

GHANA RE-ELECTED TO THE UN HUMAN RIGHTS COUNCIL3

On 13 October 2026, Ghana was re-elected to the United Nations Human Rights Council (HRC) for another three-year term, beginning 1 January 2027, securing 173 votes out of 181 valid ballots in the General Assembly.

This re-election builds on Ghana’s longstanding engagement with the Council and its work to promote and protect human rights. It also renews Ghana’s responsibility, alongside the Council’s 46 other members, to uphold the highest standards of human rights and strengthen international cooperation.

The Council plays a vital role in monitoring human rights, supporting accountability and advancing the prevention of mass atrocities through mechanisms such as the Universal Periodic Review, Special Procedures and investigative missions.

As Ghana begins its new term, the opportunity is to translate commitments into consistent action, strengthen principled leadership and contribute to early warning, prevention and the protection of human dignity for all.
