GHANA’S VICE-PRESIDENT VISITS UNIFIL

The Vice-President of the Republic of Ghana, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, visited the UNIFIL area of operation and the country’s troops serving for peace in south Lebanon last week.

Among the highlights of the 20-22 November visit included Dr. Bawumia’s meeting with UNIFIL Head of Mission and Force Commander Major General Stefano Del Col in Naqoura and attending a colourful medals presentation parade at the headquarters of UNIFIL’s Ghanaian peacekeepers in Al Qawzah.

During their meeting, Major General Del Col thanked the visiting dignitary for Ghana’s “outstanding contribution” to UNIFIL since 1978.

Ghana is one of the largest troop contributor to UNIFIL, with almost 900 currently serving with the peacekeeping mission in furthering peace in south Lebanon.

Some of the many key tasks performed by the Ghanaian Battalion include conducting day and night patrols, monitoring the over 23 kilometre stretch of the 120-km Blue Line, providing humanitarian assistance to local authorities and civilians.

The Vice President conveyed the gratitude of Ghana’s President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, for the Ghanaian peacekeepers’ sacrifices and asked them to continue to lift high the flag of Ghana.

While in Lebanon, Vice President Dr. Bawumia and his 27-member delegation also paid visits to the President of the Republic of Lebanon, Michel Aoun, the Speaker of the Lebanese Parliament, Nabih Berri, and the Prime Minister-designate, Saad Hariri.
