Mr. Secretary General,
Your Excellencies,
Ladies and Gentlemen,
Ghana, as a champion country for the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration, has achieved significant milestones over the period by developing appropriate structures, policies, and other legal frameworks to ensure the effective implementation of the Global Compact for Migration (GCM), using a whole-of-government and whole-of-society approach.
Some of the key structural achievements include a National Coordination Mechanism (NCM) and a National Implementation Plan for the GCM for Ghana, with six priority areas for the state.
This roundtable focuses on objectives 1, 3, 7, 17, and 23, and examines how Ghana, a champion country, is progressively implementing them through its activities and programmes to ensure effective migration governance.
Objective 1:
Collecting disaggregated data as a basis for evidence-based policies, in terms of regular and irregular migration flows.
Objective 3:
Information provision for migrants, as well as giving them access to information required for them to make a decision, decreases the vulnerabilities associated with migrants, hence, increases their protection.
Objective 7:
Objective 7 is to manage and reduce vulnerabilities in migrant protection/human rights laws, which Ghana is in the advanced stage of developing a national framework to ensure identification, referral, and protection of migrants in vulnerable situations.
Objective 17
I will appeal to all GCM champion countries and advocates to eliminate all forms of discrimination against migrants, including racism, stigmatization, xenophobia, and hate speeches, and rather focus on the contributions migrants make in our communities and societies, while we strengthen partnerships and cooperation as member states to collectively align with the goal of Safe, Orderly, and Regular Migration for all.
Thank you.
